| | Not everyone wants an iPad. In fact, many Apple haters would argue no one needs an iDevice, when there are so many other great options. Happily, if you're looking for an alternative there truly are plenty of compelling options — many that cost less than Apple's slates. Here are our favorite Android tablets (plus one respectable Windows slate!). | | | |

| | | | | | | The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is a tweener in more ways than one. This 8-inch Android tablet is the medium-size tablet in Samsung's new lineup, sandwiched between the smaller and cheaper Tab 3 7.0 and larger and more premium Tab 3 10.1. At $299, the Tab 3 8.0 is also priced between the $30 more expensive iPad mini and $199 7-inch slates like the Galaxy Nexus 7. However, Samsung offers a good deal of bang for your buck, including a built-in TV remote, long battery life and a bright and colorful display. And if you like the TouchWiz features on Samsung's smartphones, you'll feel right at home on this tablet. | | | | | | | If you think budget laptops are all about cutting corners, think again. Acer's latest 15-inch notebook, the $499 Aspire E1-572-6870, features the latest fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. You get all of this in a design that's lighter than competing machines. The Aspire E1 lacks a touch screen, so overall, is this Windows 8 system worth the price? | | | | | | |
